Matt Targett lands Premier League move after Newcastle United release

Matt Targett has found a new club after leaving Newcastle United this summer.

The former Aston Villa man left Newcastle at the end of last season when his contract expired after four and a half years on the books at St James' Park.

After joining on loan from Villa and helping Newcastle to survive the drop, fans demanded the club make the move a permanent one, which they did in the summer of 2022.

Injuries plagued Targett's time on Tyneside, and eventually, youngster Lewis Hall became the first-choice at left-back. As a result, last season, Targett was sent out on loan to Middlesbrough, where he became a popular figure.

Unfortunately for Targett, he wasn't able to help Boro back into the Premier League, which would likely have earned him a permanent switch to the Riverside.

Instead, Targett has been on the lookout for a new club since leaving Newcastle, and on Sunday, Ben Jacobs reported via X that the 30-year-old will join Premier League newcomers Hull City.

The move will certainly rub salt in Middlesbrough's wounds as it was Hull who won the play-off final against Middlesbrough after they were reinstated to the play-offs after Southampton were kicked out for spying on Middlesbrough's training sessions.

Targett will be a good signing for Hull

If Targett can maintain his fitness as well as he did last season, he will be a huge signing for the Tigers.

When available for Newcastle, Targett was often a really good player, but patience wore thin when he spent more time in the treatment room than on the pitch.

Still, we wish Targett the best of luck at his new club, but as always, gan canny when you play Newcastle.
