Matthias Jaissle: I'm pushing for more signings after £50m Gonzalez move

It was another entertaining affair at St James' Park last night, as Newcastle followed Sunday's 2-2 draw against Liverpool with a 3-2 win over West Brom in the Carabao Cup.

Matthias Jaissle spoke to the media after the match, not only reacting to the Millwall draw, but discussing Harvey Barnes' brace, the "long fight" to sign Nico Gonzalez, Nick Woltemade's display and the "amazing" Amar Dedic and Sean Steur, who both stood out against the Baggies.

The boss also confirmed that Will Osula will be going for more scans soon on his foot injury, then discussed his transfer wishes heading into the final few days of the window.

Jaissle want more signings after cup win 

Matthias Jaissle has vowed to "push every day" to bring more signings to the club before Tuesday's 11pm deadline. 

The 38-year-old also gave a straight "yes" when asked if Joe Willock is likely to stay at the club, despite links to Besiktas, and said similar on Nick Woltemade, while accepting that "things can change" from day to day.

On incomings, his response to Craig Hope was clear. "Yes (I want more signings). Where? This is something I will not tell you. But yes, I will push every day (for new signings)."

Jaissle also touched on our new approach to transfers, insisting we prefer young talents with room to grow. “We want to continue our brave way, not bringing in guys who are close to retirement", he said. 

"He brings serious quality" - Jaissle on Nico

Jaissle has hailed the arrival of Nico Gonzalez, believing the 24-year-old will bring "serious quality", defensive stability and a winning mentality to his Newcastle side.

Speaking to the club's official website, the German said: 

“I’m very happy to see Nico become a Newcastle United player. He brings serious quality and elite experience in a key area of the pitch.

“Nico is a really strong ball carrier - somebody who can drive the team forward while staying composed under pressure. He also brings discipline defensively, he reads the game well and his physicality makes him well suited to the Premier League.

“Nico is a proven winner who has already played at some huge clubs in Europe’s top leagues, but he’s also still young and hungry to develop further. He is a fantastic addition to our squad.”

Sporting director Ross Wilson also spoke highly of Nico, admitting the former Porto star was the "one we wanted" in our search for a new No.6:

“We’ve worked patiently on this transfer for a number of weeks. This was the one we wanted, and we’re delighted to welcome Nico to Newcastle United this evening. He was an ambitious target but following our discussions, he was so keen to join this club.

“He fits the exact criteria we set for this position and we weren’t prepared to compromise on that. He’s 24 years old, with an abundance of elite experience across Manchester City, FC Porto and Barcelona. He’s already already shown his quality in the Premier League and we’re sure there is more to come here in a black and white shirt.

“We believe he brings a range of qualities that will complement our team, and his experience across some of Europe’s top competitions will only be of benefit to Newcastle United.”
