Matthias Jaissle: Newcastle are out for revenge

Matthias Jaissle has challenged Newcastle United to turn their frustration from Thursday night’s Carabao Cup defeat into motivation when Everton visit St James’ Park tonight.

A disappointing 3-1 defeat at the Hill Dickinson Stadium saw us knocked out of the cup at the last 16 stage, but our head coach is determined to see a response in front of our own supporters.

Toon out for revenge tonight

Jaissle has made it clear that Newcastle are targeting an immediate response against Everton, with the opportunity to put things right arriving just days after our cup disappointment.

“The frustration needs to be turned into motivation now. We are looking to get revenge on Monday night.

"We have plenty from Thursday night that we can build on back at home tonight.

"Being mature and more clinical, not giving almost a gift for the opposition to score, it feels the opposition is not giving us these gifts.”

There is little time to dwell on the cup exit, with another meeting against David Moyes’ side providing us  with the chance to respond, knowing a win could take us back up to 7th; above Aston Villa, Bournemouth and Spurs.

Our performance in the second half on Thursday was particularly frustrating, as Everton took advantage of individual errors to score three times and end our hopes of progressing to a quarter-final clash with Fleetwood Town.

Individual errors must stop

While Jaissle believes there are positives to take from Thursday’s performance, he has also been clear that Newcastle must address the defensive mistakes that have cost us in recent matches.

“It is something where we need to work on…not conceding so many goals.

"We need to just avoid these individual mistakes, especially where the opposition is not that dominant on the pitch. We need to improve for the next match on Monday.”

It is an important message ahead of Monday’s rematch. Thursday showed that we can create opportunities, but individual errors at both ends of the pitch and a lack of ruthlessness cost us dearly, not for the first time this season.

Jaissle now needs his players to show they have learned from Thursday’s mistakes. With Everton back at St James’ Park and without a win away from home all season, there is an immediate opportunity to deliver the response he is demanding.
