Matthias Jaissle reacts to Newcastle 2-1 Hull - "We overcame"

Matthias Jaissle has reacted to Newcastle United’s 2-1 victory over Hull City, as we bounced back from Monday's battering at Leeds with a much-needed win.

Newcastle raced into a two-goal lead in a fluid first-half display, with Joe Willock and Lewis Hall scoring just four minutes apart before Yoane Wissa failed to convert his penalty to make it 3-0.

Hull rallied with a second-half fightback, making for a nervy end at St James' Park, but we hung on for a precious three points and our first home win of the new league season.

"We survived" - Jaissle hails Toon mentality 

Speaking after the game, Jaissle was pleased with the response from his players and believes they deserved their two-goal advantage at the break.

“It was a very important reaction from the team. We survived in the end, we suffered a lot in the end. But that's normal in football if you don't kill the game.

“After Leeds, we wanted to show a reaction in front of our fans, and I think the first half was really good. We were totally dominant in the first half. 

“We deserved to be 2-0 up. We created chances, we were aggressive, we won duels, and we controlled the game. 

Jaissle then commented on our mentality to see out the game, praising our ability to hold on without nine senior players, while those on the pitch were tiring. 

“In the second half we suffered a little bit more. We knew Hull would come back and make it difficult for us. We had to defend with everything we had.

"I am proud to see the mentality on the pitch until the end, even with tired bodies. This is normal if you can't substitute a lot, as we have nine players injured, so that was another challenge today - but we overcame that. 

“The boys showed character, especially after what happened at Leeds. It was important that we stayed together and fought until the end.”

A response Newcastle desperately needed

It certainly wasn’t as comfortable as we may have hoped after such a dominant first half, but it's three points secured, a reaction to Leeds and a momentum-builder heading into the international break.

Jaissle demanded a more aggressive and physical performance during his pre-match press conference, and Newcastle delivered exactly that during the opening 45 minutes, where Barnes, Hall, Steur, Willock and Miley all shone.

Hull made life difficult in the end, but we got over the line to head into the first break on eight points after five games; a solid return given the wholesale changes we saw over the summer.
