Newcastle closing in on Nico Gonzalez - Fabrizio Romano

Some positive news to share on Newcastle United's quest for new signings, as it looks like a deal for Nico Gonzalez is moving closer.

After news of positive talks last week, a new report shared late last night suggests the Spaniard is now closing in on a move to St James' Park.

It arrives from Fabrizio Romano, who claims that Newcastle have made 'big progress' in talks to sign the 24-year-old, believing an agreement between both clubs is 'almost done.'

Nico to Newcastle now close?

According to Fabrizio Romano, an agreement between Newcastle and Man City over a deal for Nico Gonzalez is "almost done."

After significant progress during talks on Sunday night, it's thought Newcastle are now pushing to wrap up the deal early this week, with work now well underway n the

As Romano highlights, the next step appears to be striking a deal with the player, who is being sold the project and vision by Matthas Jaissle.

Craig Hope has already suggested that the player is 'open' to joining Newcastle after Man City sanctioned his sale, and this feeling may have only grown after Sunday's snub at home to Bournemouth, despite the lack of fit defensive midfielders.

Speaking on his Youtube channel last night, Romano added:

“There is big, big, big confidence at Newcastle to get a deal done for Nico Gonzalez in the next hours.

"Man City have opened doors to his exit. The message is clear: 'you can go.' And Nico understands about the club's position.

"Jaissle is pushing and trying to present the project and the vision."

A positive start to a pivotal week

As talented as they are, it felt slightly concerning that our central midfield consisted of 18-year-old Steur and 20-year-old Miley on Sunday, with 20-year-old Bamba coming on from the bench.

Signing Nico would give us that injection of class and know-how in front of that back four, also allowing us to pursue at least one attacker over the final week of the window.

A natural No.10 is needed, and many who believe a new right winger should be targeted, especially now Murphy is out of contract in 12 months and has previously attracted interest from Everton.

Time will tell, but starting the week signing Nico would be a huge lift after yesterday's late heartbreak!
