Newcastle pushing for signing BEFORE Liverpool clash as Nico talks continue - Report
Realistically, Newcastle United have missed their window to secure their seventh summer signing before tomorrow's registration deadline.
Players registered after 12pm on Friday won't be eligible for the opening weekend of the 2026/27 Premier League season.
However, that won't stop the club from trying to bring another player through the door before Sunday's game kicks off at 4.30pm, as Mark Douglas reports.
Toon pushing for signing number seven
Newcastle are 'pushing' to seal another signing over the next 24 hours, even if any new addition is highly unlikely to play this weekend.
This comes from Mark Douglas' latest piece for The iPaper, which reveals that Newcastle are prioritising a deal for another midfielder, with Man City's Nico Gonzalez one of the key options being explored.
Douglas reports that our attempts to land the 24-year-old Spaniard are 'ongoing', insisting our interest is serious. There's also an internal belief that a deal can be done following 'positive talks' with Man City.
It's thought the former Porto man will be sold the chance to become a big star in the “Newcastle 2.0” project, rather than warm the bench at the Etihad, where he has started just two Premier League games since January.
Newcastle want a swift resolution to any deal, hoping for clarity from the player and Man City. Should that not come, sources at Newcastle insist that other exciting options lie in wait to 'seriously raise the level Matthias Jaissle‘s first team.'
Pressure on to deliver quick signings
Amar Dedic's £29.5m arrival was much-needed earlier this week, giving us a versatile full-back that the manager trusts from his time in Austria.
However, there are still several gaps to fill. We need a defensive midfielder with know-how and experience, a natural No.10 suited to Jaissle's 4-2-3-1 system and could do with a right-winger to elevate that side of the pitch, following tough 2025/26's for Elanga and Murphy.
On top of that, there's a leadership vacuum that needs to be addressed, with our previous two captains both leaving in Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier, all while we've signed an 18-year-old Steur and 20-year-old trio Jaouen, Bamba and Toure.
A week on Tuesday, our time is up, yet we've still got at least three to bring in. Over to you, Ross Wilson!
