Newcastle reach agreement to sign Nico Gonzalez from Man City - Report

It's turning into a really positive few days for Newcastle United, who look set to kick off the penultimate week of the summer transfer window in style.

After a hugely encouraging display at St James' Park in Sunday's 2-2 draw with Liverpool, Matthias Jaissle might just have landed himself a top-class No.6.

Following news last night that Newcastle's bid to sign Nico Gonzalez was advancing, it now looks like we've got our man.

Newcastle strike Nico deal

Newcastle United have reached a verbal agreement with Man City to sign midfielder Nico Gonzalez, according to Fabrizio Romano.

In a 'here we go' announcement on X, Romano reveals that the fee is set to be £47m plus a further £3m add-ons.

Gonzalez has given the 'green light' to the deal, suggesting Newcastle have quickly received buy-in from the players' side after progress was made on the deal last night.

A statement signing for Jaissle!

This feels like a big moment for Newcastle United, and the classy, senior midfield addition Jaissle has been crying out for.

After a season that saw us finish 12th, miss out on Europe and lose key players like Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, it left some questioning where this project was heading.

The new transfer policy has seen us pursue several young, overseas talents who arrive with excitement, but a big element of risk. But Gonzalez is not in that mould.

Yes, he's still only 24. But he has Champions League pedigree from his stints at Man City and Porto, played 41 times in all competitions last season under Pep Guardiola, and was previously described as City's 'mini Rodri' by his former boss.

A superb buy and perhaps a sign of the Jaissle pull. Now for a versatile attacker who can play in that No.10 role!
