Newcastle Women kick-off 2026/27 promotion push with comfortable win

Newcastle United Women kicked off their WSL 2 campaign in fine style with a 2 – 0 home victory over newly promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers Women in front of a healthy 1,671 fans at Gateshead International Stadium.

Goals from Beth Lumsden and an own goal by Georgia Marshall inside the first twenty minutes gave Wor Lasses their first three points of hopefully many this campaign, and the perfect start to what they hope will be a promotion-winning season.

In truth, 2 – 0 possibly flattered Wolves, who only had 31% possession compared to the dominant Lady Mags’ 69%. Newcastle also had 15 shots to Wolves' four, and completed 521 passes to the visitors 189, showing the level of domination.

All that said, it was perhaps a surprise that United only registered the two goals on the day. Many of those 15 shots were not on target or sufficiently testing for Wanderers keeper Emily Orman, who, after a busy first half, was relatively quiet in the second.

Not as quiet those as her opposite number Anna Tamminen, who could almost have taken a book and a deck chair into her penalty area to occupy her time. Wolves hardly carried a threat in a pretty toothless offensive effort.

Newcastle meanwhile, and especially in the first half could easily have had more goals. In her post game conference, Manager Tanya Oxtoby did admit to being a little bit disappointed and frustrated that her side’s dominance hadn’t brought more reward.

However, she was quick to point out that her side had carried out the game plan effectively and two goals three points and a clean sheet was not a bad afternoon’s work and one she was happy to settle for. 

Admitting the side was still building and growing together, she knows there’s still a lot of work to do and that this was merely a starting point, but one that showed things are moving in the right direction.

Newcastle 2-0 Wolves: How it happened 

United could and perhaps should have been in front inside the first two minutes. Lumsden’s right wing cross flicked on by Martha Thomas’ clever header to find Kathleen McGovern in acres of space at the back post about eight-yards out.

McGovern got a good shot away, but was denied a WSL 2 debut goal by Orman, who made an excellent diving block to her left-hand side. McGovern’s effort was perhaps just a touch too close to the keeper.

But the raucous Newcastle following did not have long to wait for the game and season opener, which came on eight minutes. McGovern winning a ball inside her own half before drifting past a couple of defenders and playing a superb through ball that split the Wolves defence open.

Lumsden timed her run superbly to sprint past Beth Roberts and get to the ball first, just before Orman, who had come from her line to try and clear the danger. Lumsden’s pace, though, was decisive and her finish was clinical from just outside the box into an empty net.

A flying start for the Lasses and it got better a mere ten minutes later with a second. Lois Joel’s excellent ball-winning challenge in midfield saw her find Thomas who played an almost identical ball to the one McGovern had played to Lumsden for the first goal.

Lumsden was away again and struck a sweet low cross into the middle for the breaking Mollie Lambert to run on to. Lambert got on the end of it, but Orman diving bravely blocked the ex-Durham midfielder’s effort. Unfortunately for the Wolves keeper and her team, the ball bounced straight into Marshall, who rocketed into the net to make it 2-0. 

Two up nearly became three on twenty-one minutes as Newcastle threatened to run riot. A brilliant one-touch football saw McGovern given a clear chance that Marshall did brilliantly to block. 

That rebound fell to Thomas. The ex-Tottenham striker looked a certain scorer from only six yards out, but was denied by a brilliant point-blank save from Orman who just about kept her side in the game. Having only just about survived the opening onslaught, Wolves did steady their ship without looking dangerous.

Newcastle’s last good opportunity of an impressive opening half came with five minutes to go in the first forty-five. Kaitlyn Torpey cutting inside from the left flank before releasing Lambert through the middle. Lambert actually rounding Orman but was forced wide in doing so.

Lambert managed to find McGovern, who crossed low inside the box. Wolves trying to clear only found Torpey still up with the attack and from 12-yards the Aussie full-back rifled in a goal-bound effort that Marshall did superbly to block and keep out.

It ended a superb opening period from Oxtoby’s Lady Mags. The crowd well content sat back enjoyed their half-time and no doubt were looking for more in the second half. Unfortunately, they did not get what they hoped for.

A combination of reasons saw Wolves pretty much sit in almost happy to only lose by two goals. United pressed and pressed but could not find an opening in a frustrating second half. Huge amounts of possession but not a lot of penetration, much like Jaissle's men in that opening 45 minutes at Millwall.

Tough test next after comfortable win 

Newcastle seemed happy not to be over-adventurous and settled for controlled, calm football that was almost too easy for them at times. But it would be churlish to complain. An opening-day win was the objective, and that objective was achieved with comfort and style.

Next up for The Lasses is a tricky trip to Bristol City one of the pre-season promotion favourites. City, though, crashed to a 4 – 1 defeat at Sunderland whilst United were seeing off Wolves. They will be looking to bounce back immediately to kickstart their season.

If United could take a win on the road in Bristol, it would be a hugely significant early-season scalp and a real statement of intent for Oxtoby’s side.
