Newcastle’s Park Seung-soo one win from Asian Games gold with South Korea

Newcastle winger Park Seung-soo is one win away from an Asian Games gold medal after South Korea booked their place in Saturday’s final against hosts Japan.

The 19-year-old was an unused substitute in Wednesday’s 2-1 semi-final victory over China.

South Korea came from behind, with Lee Young-jun cancelling out Wang Yudong’s opener before Stoke City’s Bae Jun-ho scored the winner in the 82nd minute. They are now chasing a fourth successive men’s football gold medal.

Park’s involvement in South Korea’s run

Park has made two substitute appearances during the tournament, making his South Korea Under-23 debut in the closing stages of their opening 4-1 win over Qatar.

He then came on in the 76th minute of the 2-0 victory over Saudi Arabia as South Korea secured top spot in Group D. However, he remained on the bench for both the 4-0 quarter-final win over Vietnam and Wednesday’s semi-final, so he is still awaiting his first minutes in the knockout stages.

Saturday’s final against Japan takes place at Toyota Stadium on 3 October, with kick-off at 11.30am BST.

Hopefully we’ll see him on the pitch against Japan, but even if he doesn’t get on, it’s obviously fantastic experience for him to be part of an international final.

Good luck, Park!
