Osula injury concern for Newcastle as Jaissle faces wait over Everton return
William Osula has suffered a fresh ankle injury, leaving Newcastle waiting to discover whether he can face Everton again on Monday night.
Matthias Jaissle confirmed the striker was unable to continue in Thursday's 3-1 Carabao Cup defeat, with his half-time withdrawal coming in only his second start since returning from injury.
Jaissle explains Osula's withdrawal
Osula received treatment after James Tarkowski's first-half challenge and played on until the break, when Yoane Wissa replaced him. Jacob Ramsey and Harvey Barnes also came off, with Joelinton and Anthony Elanga introduced.
Asked about the triple substitution in his post-match press conference, Jaissle explained:
"Of course, Will Osula was not able to continue. He twisted his ankle in that occasion when he took the shot.
"And with the other two as well, we wanted to have a bit more fresh energy there, also with thinking of course on Monday's match."
Asked whether it was too early to tell if Osula could make Monday night, he replied:
"Yeah, it's too early at the moment."
It is another frustrating interruption for a player who had only just worked his way back into the starting XI.
As the match report highlighted, Newcastle struggled for quality in the final third even after the changes. Wissa is an option if Osula misses out, but whoever starts on Monday needs to offer more than we managed at Everton.
