Talk continues around more ins and outs in this position, as highlighted by reports in Italy this morning, who've linked the club with Inter's Petar Sucic.
Sucic still a target?
As reported by Tutto Mercato, Newcastle are showing active interest in Inter Milan midfielder Petar Sucic.
They claim that both Newcastle and Leeds United have enquired about a potential deal for the 22-year-old, who recently impressed at the World Cup with Croatia.
It sounds like a deal will not be straightforward, however. According to Tutto Mercato, Inter are insisting that he is not for sale, playing down talk of his departure despite indications that Newcastle and Leeds may be willing to pay €35-40m.
Sucic arrived at the San Siro from Dinamo Zagreb just last summer and shone in his first season in Italy.
No room if Bruno stays
This week feels like a huge one in the Bruno saga, with a level of clarity likely to come later this week if (and hopefully when) the Brazilian reports back to training.
Should he return, knuckle down, respect Newcastle's stance and come to terms with the fact a move to Arsenal isn't happening, we'll be well set in midfield, leaving no space for Sucic.
Howe hinted last summer that he wants a pool of six midfielders, and he currently has seven in Bruno, Bamba, Joelinton, Ramsey, Miley, Steur and Willock.
The latter looks set to depart, but that still leaves six should our skipper stay, meaning any links to Sucic or such like seem wholly dependent on Bruno.
