Sean Steur signs! - Announcement video, full details and first Newcastle interview
Newcastle United have officially announced the signing of 18-year-old wonderkid Sean Steur from Ajax.
In a move that took everyone by surprise, Newcastle United agreed a £23 million deal with Eredivisie giants Ajax for teenage sensation Sean Steur on Tuesday.
Within hours, Steur was on his way to Newcastle to finalise the deal. The 18-year-old was spotted landing at Newcastle on Tuesday evening and was again snapped by Sky Sports cameras on Wednesday leaving the KNOX, where he'd undergone the first part of his medial.
Sean Steur broke into the Ajax first team last season and ended up playing 26 games, including three in the Champions League. Ajax were hoping to tie him down to a long-term deal, but a change in sporting director delayed talks enough that Newcastle was able to take full advantage.
Sean Steur says it was a dream to play in the Premier League
On Thursday, the Magpies formally announced Sean Steur's arrival at Newcastle via a post on X and on the official site, where Steur spoke about his move.
“It’s an incredible feeling to be here. It’s a giant club in the Premier League and it was always my dream to play in the best league in the world, so this is really exciting.
“I was at home at Ajax – I joined when I was seven and I leave with only good memories, but when a club like Newcastle comes for you, it’s really hard to say no. The last few days have gone fast and I’m very happy to join.
“I’m a player who likes to get on the ball and play forward all the time. I’m happy playing between the lines and I feel I have a lot of energy in my game. I just want to win.”
Sean Steur will go straight into the first team squad
Sean Steur comes in just after the sale of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur, but he's not thought to be Eddie Howe's direct replacement for the Italian.
Having said that, Steur will go into the first team rather than to the academy or out on loan, so we should expect to see him involved next season.
Steur becomes Newcastle's third signing of the summer after Ewen Jaoeun and Bazoumana Toure. Things are starting to come together for the Magpies.
