Two 9/10s and one frustrating 5 - Player ratings from Newcastle 3-2 West Brom

Matthias Jaissle's first competitive win and a night filled with plenty of positive performances, as Newcastle United saw off West Brom 3-2 in the Carabao Cup.

A Bazoumana Toure tap-in and Harvey Barnes brace helped us get over the line, setting up a third round tie away to Millwall.

Here are our marks out of 10 and comments on each player involved in last night's game.  

Starting 11

Jaouen (6) - Will be really disappointed to have been beaten at the near post for the opening goal. Looked very calm and tidy possession, and made a smart stop late on.

Dedic (9*) - Was at the heart of everything in attack and finished the game with a couple of assists. Has settled in seamlessly and already looks like a smart addition. Always available on the overlap, has good delivery, a great engine and can drive forward with the ball at pace.

Thiaw (7) - Was unlucky to not find himself on the scoresheet forcing a great save from the keeper. Seems to relish having the armband on, but was wasteful in possession on more than one occasion while trying to play through the lines. A few big blocks, which is par for the course. 

Botman (7) - Won his fair share of headers, which we’ve come to expect from the big Dutchman, and looked strong in his defensive work on the ground. Attempted several raking diagonals without much success. Pleasing to get him through another full game unscathed and has stepped up well after a poor pre-season.

Hall (6.5) - A solid performance undone by another penalty concession, this time for handball. Almost redeemed himself shortly after when he rattled the post. Needs to cut these errors out of his game and fast.

Steur (8) - Played some lovely passes, always looks to go forward and looks mature well beyond his years in possession. Has the potential to go to the top, but does need to tidy up the defensive side of his game. A silly yellow card for a late tackle happened just as West Brom were slicing through the midfield with relative ease. Easy to forget he’s only 18, probably because he plays with such class.

Ramsey (7) - Solid without being spectacular. Rarely wasted possession and was always available to receive the ball. His best position does seem to be further forward, but he didn’t let anyone down. 

Murphy (6) - Wasn’t quite at his best on the ball but his intelligence opened up the space for Dedic on the outside. Is a useful squad member still and can always be relied upon to whip plenty of crosses in.

Willock (6.5) - Had a glorious chance early on when he seemed to take an extra step rather than hitting with his left first time. Popped up in some decent positions, but has never found the consistency that he had during that golden loan spell.

Toure (6) - Grabbed the equaliser nipping in at the far post, which bumps up his mar, but in truth this was a poor performance overall. Hooked at half time and completely outshone by Harvey Barnes. Only 20 years old and has bags of potential, but this wasn’t his night, and there was very little chemistry with Hall on the left.

Woltemade (5) - The biggest conundrum facing Jaissle right now is big Nick. His biggest attribute is his close control, yet balls just seem to bounce off him. Plays like a striker who’s a foot shorter than he actually is and lacks any type of physicality, which is a concern. A broken footballer at the moment who needs a confidence boost. A few decent touches and improved late on, but offered very little both on or off the ball. 

Substitutes 

Barnes (9) - What a difference he made when he came on. A couple of brilliantly taken goals, looked razor sharp and nearly laid on a couple of assists too. Firmly entrenched as the first choice left winger right now and looks primed for a big season.

Wissa (6) - Missed a difficult chance from six yards out after a lovely volleyed cross by Barnes. Was largely anonymous aside from that and hasn’t quite got the same connection with Woltemade as he does with Osula.

Elanga (7) - Linked well with Dedic and looked more confident and eager to take on hi man. Was caught offside twice as he tried to use his pace to get in behind the defence. Still trying to work out how he didn’t win a free kick at the end!

Miley (6.5) - Looked much more solid with Miley in the middle of the park as he exudes calm in possession. Has really improved his aerial ability in recent times and is winning a lot more duels.
