WATCH: Elanga wins Goal of the Month for stunning Spurs finish
Anthony Elanga has won the Premier League’s Guinness Goal of the Month award for August, and what a goal to win it with.
The Swede took the prize for his stunning strike at Tottenham, with Joe Willock’s effort against Liverpool also among the nominees.
His opener helped us on our way to a 2-0 win at Spurs, securing Matthias Jaissle’s first Premier League victory as Newcastle boss. An unbelievable finish, with a move behind it that deserves another look too.
Watch it again below.
Newcastle 2.0 in full flow
This was Newcastle 2.0 in full flow. Nico Gonzalez picked out Amar Dedic with a superb diagonal pass, our right-back timed his run and headed the ball into Elanga’s path, and the turn and left-footed finish in off the post were outstanding.
Three players combining so quickly, each doing their bit properly. Nico had only just arrived, yet there he was on his debut producing exactly the sort of pass we needed from midfield.
Dedic’s willingness to get forward gives that pass somewhere to go. It also allows Elanga to attack the box, where he can do damage, with our right-back supplying the width. When the timing is right, as it was here, it’s a lovely combination.
Elanga went 32 Premier League appearances without a goal last season, then scored in each of our first two games this time around. You’d never guess he’d struggled from the way he took this one. Keep getting him into those positions and more goals should follow.
