WATCH: Matthias Jaissle's media room reaction to Leeds 4-1 Newcastle
Newcastle's unbeaten run is over, as a sobering 90 minutes of football saw us beaten comfortably by Leeds United at Elland Road.
The home side outfought us, looked too physical and too strong for a Newcastle side who never recovered from two goals in less than three minutes just after the half-hour mark.
Matthias Jaissle has been discussing the nature of the defeat, which felt like a real reality check, the first big setback for his young team, our growing injury list and our chance to bounce back this Saturday against Hull City.
The boss was keen to stress that this will be a season of ups-and-downs for his inexperienced side.
Jaissle: It's now time to learn
Matthias Jaissle believed Newcastle failed to "bring the fundamentals" to Monday night's 4-1 defeat at Elland Road.
He feels his side failed to match Leeds' physicality, intensity and ability to win duals, also criticising our unforced errors.
"Not only one thing went wrong. We couldn’t bring the fundamentals in the first half.
"We couldn’t match the intensity of Leeds, in duals or physicality. That should be the basics of football. Unforced errors were taking place."
"We were aware we'd have challenges and ups and downs as a young squad. A tough night, but now is a time to learn. Now is the time to show the right reaction, which we can do on Saturday.
"We needed to find the right reaction on the pitch, and we struggled with that. These are young lads. The learning curve needs to be fast"
Jaissle didn't hide his frustration at the nature of our defeat and sub-par performance, but vowed to spend the long busy journey home working on ways to improve.
“The frustration is a big part of it. It feels ****, for sure. But we need to analyse it straight away.
"We have a long bus journey back to Newcastle, and it will be the first thing we do.
"Work on it and influence the things we can influence. Let's work on what we need to improve and hopefully see that on Saturday."
Nico loss one of several blows
Jaissle also spoke about the frustration of not only losing Anthony Elanga to injury and Jacob Ramsey to a thigh issue in the warm-up, but Nico Gonzalez to concussion early in the match.
The Spaniard started, but was forced off after 19 minutes after failing to recover from a blow to the face while the game was all square at 0-0.
It was the right move from our medics, but it left our midfield light and sorely lacking in experience, as 18-year-old Sean Steur joined 20-year-old Lewis Miley at the heart of our midfield.
Ramsey is an early doubt for Saturday's clash with Hull, Elanga's injury "doesn't look good" and there is every chance that concussion rules stop Nico from playing against the Tigers.
