Will Osula’s quietly impressive record as Jaissle hails “huge” potential

Will Osula was back in the starting line up with a bang on Sunday, opening the scoring as Newcastle United secured a valuable 2-0 away victory at Crystal Palace.

The Danish forward has quietly built an impressive record in the Premier League, with SIX goals in his last nine starts a clear sign of his improvement in front of goal after an erratic start to life on Tyneside.

Matthias Jaissle has been praising his potential after another important contribution secured a vital win for the German.

Osula continues impressive scoring record

Osula replaced Yoane Wissa up front at Selhurst Park, and the big Dane repaid his manager’s faith by opening the scoring shortly after half-time.

The 22-year-old reacted quickly to Jacob Murphy’s excellent cross, getting across his marker to finish from close range, giving Newcastle the breakthrough we desperately needed after a pretty turgid first 45.

It was another encouraging moment for Osula, who was starting his first game since our opening day draw with Liverpool, and Jaissle was delighted to see the striker back in the side.

“A striker’s job, right? He did an amazing job. We’re happy that he’s getting back on track.

"He was out for a long time, so now physically he’s improving, and he’s a player with huge potential.”

At 6ft 4', with quick feet, pace and the ability to strike a ball cleanly, Jaissle has a lot to work with in the former Sheffield United talent.

Three Mags pushing for striker spot?

Osula’s goalscoring return will give Jaissle plenty to ponder when he has Matias Fernandez-Pardo back from illness.

The £51m Belgian has often played as our No.9 since arriving from Lille, while Yoane Wissa had always operated as a central striker before Jaissle's 4-2-3-1 system saw the DR Congo star drop into a No.10 role.

With Osula fit again and scoring on his return, Wissa and Fernandez-Pardo must up their game to take that spot back, although many believe the latter is more suited to the wing.

After a difficult run of results and a tough period on the sidelines for Osula, let's hope this is the start of a better run for the team and 22-year-old.
