Alan Shearer reacts to Anthony Gordon's £70m move to Barcelona
Alan Shearer had a few choice words for Anthony Gordon throughout this season after some below-par performances for Newcastle United.
As with many Newcastle fans, Alan Shearer was fully aware of the talent that Anthony Gordon possesses, but questioned where the application of that talent had disappeared to during the last campaign, and he wasn't afraid to speak his mind on the matter.
It felt like Gordon only put the effort in when it was a Champions League game, prompting many to question his commitment to the club.
As the season drew to a close, it became clear that Gordon's head was no longer focused on his job on Tyneside and that caused the fanbase to turn on him.
Alan Shearer: Good luck to Anthony Gordon
Now that Gordon is expected to be unveiled as a Barcelona player any moment now, Alan Shearer has been asked his opinion on the £70 million move.
Rather than put the boot in, though, Alan Shearer opted for a more diplomatic approach, telling Befair that he wishes Gordon luck.
"I'm not upset at all that he’s leaving. I guess when a player wants to move and has made it clear his heart's not in playing for the club anymore, that's fine, you do what's best for the football club.
"No one's bigger than the club, so it's a good deal for Newcastle, first and foremost, and it's a really good deal for Anthony Gordon, so, good luck to him.
“You thank him for what he's done. I think he has, without doubt, split opinions with his time at Newcastle. But yeah, good luck to him. I've got no issues."
Shearer should go into politics
We feel that Shearer was choosing his words carefully there; his face said a lot more than his words did.
Like everyone else, it's clear that Shearer feels that Gordon has bought into. his own hype, and to quote the late, great James Tolkan, his ego is writing cheques his body can't cash.
We do wish Gordon luck, though. We don't have that same level of animosity for him as we had for Alexander Isak, and the fact that he's moving abroad certainly helps.
