Alfie Harrison joins Dundee after summer Newcastle exit
Alfie Harrison has signed for Dundee after leaving Newcastle United at the end of his contract in June.
The 20-year-old impressed on trial, earning a deal until January with an option to extend, as Dundee confirmed yesterday.
Harrison was one of seven Under-21 players released by Newcastle this summer. He had arrived from Manchester City in February 2024, but his first-team involvement amounted to friendly appearances.
Harrison earns a deal after Dundee trial
Harrison said:
“I’ve loved every bit of my trial. From the first day I stepped into the building, it felt like the right atmosphere. It was somewhere I wanted to show what I’m about, and now hopefully I can push on and keep doing my thing.
“The way everyone has welcomed me, you can see the love for the club. I’d love to be here for a long period of time, but that’s down to me to show.”
Dundee manager Steven Pressley added:
“We had a feeling that when the window closed, our business was complete, but due to unforeseen circumstances around injury, we’ve been forced back into the market.
“As a result of that, Alfie joined us on trial several weeks ago and has worked really hard.
“We think he’s a young player with great potential that can add competition to the squad, and we’re delighted to welcome Alfie on board.”
Harrison scored in one of Dundee’s friendlies during the international break. He now has the chance to build on that start in competitive football.
Maybe we got ahead of ourselves
There was quite a bit of hype and excitement when we signed Alfie from Manchester City. Under the previous ownership, we weren’t used to bringing in exciting prospects from clubs like that, so perhaps we got a little carried away.
Realistically, we should expect more of these young prospects to move on than to establish themselves at Premier League level. That doesn’t mean they can’t go on to have good careers elsewhere.
Best of luck to Alfie for the future. We’re keen to see how his career develops.
