Anthony Elanga facing lengthy spell out - Update on hamstring injury
Newcastle United winger Anthony Elanga has reportedly suffered a hamstring injury which could keep him out for six to eight weeks.
That is according to The Mail’s Craig Hope, who has provided an update on the Sweden international following his surprise absence from Monday night’s miserable 4-1 defeat at Leeds.
There were suggestions that the Swede had suffered a knee injury, with some rumours of a potential ACL, but it emerged that it’s in fact a hamstring problem.
Elanga suffers hamstring injury
Elanga was a surprise absentee at Elland Road, with Matthias Jaissle confirming before kick-off that the winger was set for a another scan after picking up an injury that “doesn’t look good.”
A few days on, Craig Hope has revealed that Elanga has been diagnosed with a hamstring injury and could be facing a six-to-eight-week absence.
The final timescale is still dependent on the results of further MRI testing, meaning there remains some hope that his recovery could be shorter.
However, if the initial timeframe proves accurate, Elanga could be sidelined until November, ruling him out of upcoming games against Hull, Coventry, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace.
A major blow for Jaissle
It would represent a significant setback for both Elanga and Newcastle, particularly after his impressive start to the campaign.
The 24-year-old scored in each of our first two Premier League games against Liverpool and Tottenham, immediately showing the pace, directness and goal threat that we rarely saw last term.
His absence was already noticeable at Leeds, where Jacob Murphy had a stinker on the right as Newcastle suffered their first defeat of the season.
With us also dealing with a number of other injury concerns, Jaissle could now have to manage a stretched squad during the coming weeks, making the upcoming international break a welcome one.
We face Hull City on Saturday before the break, but Elanga will not be involved for club or country over the coming weeks.
