Dan Burn confirms new five-man leadership group at Newcastle United
Club captain Dan Burn has revealed Newcastle United’s new five-man leadership group under head coach Matthias Jaissle.
The Geordie defender confirmed three new names have joined himself and vice captain Joelinton to help set the standards at St James’ Park.
Burn confirms NUFC’s new leadership group
Burn has confirmed that Malick Thiaw, Yoane Wissa and Lewis Miley have all been added to Newcastle’s leadership group, alongside himself and vice captain Joelinton.
“In addition to myself and Joelinton as captain and vice-captain, we now have Malick Thiaw, Yoane Wissa and Lewis Miley to help set the standards on the pitch, in the dressing room and around the training ground.”
This sees four members of last season’s group replaced in Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier, Jacob Murphy and Nick Pope, with Murphy’s withdrawal a slight surprise after his leadership was recently praised by Jaissle.
Back in August, Jaissle spoke about taking his time to decide on his leadership group, and has now settled on adding Thiaw, Miley and Wissa alongside his captain and vice.
Last month, the boss said: “All the other positions I will take my time as first of all, we are not that long here.
“As a coaching staff, I want to get to know the players much better. There’s still the transfer window and then at one point there will also be a leadership group involved with more names.”
A new-look leadership group under Jaissle
It is an interesting mix of experience and youth, with Thiaw and Wissa (DR Congo captain) bringing leadership from their previous teams, while Miley represents the next generation coming through at Newcastle.
With Jaissle looking to establish his own standards and identity at Newcastle, having a strong leadership group around the squad will clearly be important, particularly after Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier’s summer exit.
Burn and Joelinton remain the senior figures, but the inclusion of Thiaw, Wissa and Miley shows the responsibility being placed on three other important members of the our first team.
