Dan Burn injury update - Full extent of ankle issue now made public

Just hours before Sunday's game against Liverpool, we received news that Dan Burn had suffered an ankle injury in training last week.

An untimely blow for Matthias Jaisslee, who lost his club captain just days after Joelinton was ruled out for a 'couple of weeks' with an unspecified issue.

Burn rolled his ankle in training on Thursday and was initially expected to miss a period of weeks, although more clarity has now arrived on the extent of his foot injury.

Burn out until international break

Sky Sports' Keith Downie has issued an update on Dan Burn's ankle injury, offering some good and bad news on our club captain's situation.

The good news is that the injury 'isn't too serious', backing up initial reports suggesting the 34-year-old will not require surgery.

However, it's enough to keep the centre-back out of our next four to five games, with Downie expecting Burn to be back after the upcoming international break, ending in early October.

This means Burn will miss upcoming games against West Brom in the Carabao Cup, followed by Premier League clashes with Spurs, Bournemouth, Leeds and Hull.

Newcastle 'unlikely' to sign a centre-back

In addition to Downie's injury update, he adds that Newcastle are 'unlikely' to dip into the transfer market in light of Burn's ankle issue.

As things stand, it seems Jaissle will trust Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman and Fabian Schar to cover those two starting spots in the boss' 4-2-3-1 system.

Serbian youngster Miodrag Pivas is a left-sided option that could also fill in if required, and is expected to be in the squad for tomorrow night's cup match.

At a push, Lewis Miley is also capable of operating at centre-back, with Eddie Howe admitting last season that the 6ft 4' Geordie has played in that role during training sessions.
