Dream night for new signings as Newcastle U21s beat York on Sky Sports
Newcastle United’s youngsters came from behind to secure a 3-1 victory over York City on Tuesday night, ensuring a winning start to their EFL Trophy campaign live on Sky Sports.
Our young Magpies fell behind early on but showed a strong response to turn the game around, with goals from Vakhtang Salia and summer signings Kyran Thompson and Afner Cá securing victory.
Big night for Thompson on U21 debut
It was a particularly memorable night for 18-year-old Kyran Thompson, who played a starring role on the night.
The England youth talent marked his Newcastle U21 debut with a goal and an assist just weeks after signing his first professional contract following a move from Arsenal.
Newcastle had fallen behind after just eight minutes when Joe Felix found the net from outside the box, with York making the brighter start.
The hosts continued to threaten, but Newcastle gradually grew into the contest and got themselves level just before half-time.
In-form Georgian Vakhtang Salia found the equaliser in the 44th minute, firing home from the right side of the box to give the visitors a much-needed boost going into the break.
Newcastle then completed the turnaround almost immediately after the restart.
Just a minute into the second half, centre-back Miodrag Pivas found Thompson inside the box and the youngster finished into the bottom corner to put Newcastle 2-1 ahead.
There was also a first Newcastle goal for Afner Cá, who joined the club from Levante during the summer.
The powerful forward came off the bench and made his mark late on, racing onto a through ball from Thompson before calmly finishing in the 83rd minute to make it 3-1.
What’s next for Newcastle U21s?
The 3-1 victory gives Newcastle U21s a winning start in the EFL Trophy and another competitive game at senior level for several of our young lads to build on.
Attention now turns to their next assignment, with Newcastle U21s travelling to Bradford City in the competition on Tuesday, 22nd September 22nd.
After recovering from an early setback to claim a convincing win at York, our U21s can take plenty of positives from Tuesday night’s trip to the LNER Community Stadium, with young attackers Salia, Thompson and Ca all delivering in front of goal.
