Elanga, Ramsey and Fernandez-Pardo updates as Jaissle talks injuries and illness

Newcastle United have received a potential boost ahead of Sunday’s trip to Crystal Palace, with Matthias Jaissle providing updates on Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey and Matias Fernandez-Pardo.

Elanga and Ramsey have both returned to the pitch in training, although Jaissle will be cautious with their fitness, while Fernandez-Pardo remains a doubt after struggling with illness.

Elanga and Ramsey back in contention

Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s Premier League clash at Selhurst Park, Jaissle confirmed that Elanga has trained this week after missing Newcastle’s last four league matches.

The Swedish winger made an impressive start to the season, scoring in our opening two Premier League games against Liverpool and Tottenham, but has been unavailable for weeks.

Jaissle is hopeful that Elanga can return to the matchday squad against Palace, although he will not be ready to play the full 90 minutes.

“Anthony has trained this week and worked really hard. He won’t be able to play 90 minutes, but he is hopefully able to join the squad.

Ramsey has also returned to the training pitch after being sidelined with a thigh injury sustained during the warm-up before Newcastle’s defeat at Leeds United last month.

However, Jaissle is keen to manage the midfielder’s workload carefully rather than rush him back into action, suggesting he isn’t  in a position to start just yet.

“I am happy Jacob is back on the pitch. We need to take it step-by-step with him, we don’t want to take too many risks. I am pleased that slowly we are getting the players back.”

The gradual return of both players comes at a welcome time as we look to respond to successive defeats against Coventry City and Aston Villa.

Fernandez-Pardo struggling with illness

While there is encouragement regarding Elanga and Ramsey, Newcastle have a concern over summer signing Fernandez-Pardo.

The forward has been unable to complete a full week of training due to illness, leaving his availability for the Palace game uncertain.

“Matias still has some issues health-wise. He can only train partially. Hopefully, he can make it until the weekend.”

Fernandez-Pardo has been adjusting to life in the Premier League since arriving from Lille, playing in a No.9 role before switching to the right wing in last Saturday’s defeat to Aston Villa.
