Giorgio Scalvini one to watch as Newcastle interest resurfaces in Atalanta star

Giorgio Scalvini is a name Newcastle fans may want to keep an eye on after Fabrizio Romano provided an intriguing update on the highly-rated Atalanta defender.

We were linked with the Italy international again this summer, and Romano reveals that the centre-back was “part of the conversation” at Newcastle over the summer. 

He insists Newcastle were never close to signing him, with Atalanta unwilling to sell, but it sounds like the Italian’s future could be one to watch in 2027. 

Newcastle showed interest in Scalvini over the summer 

Speaking on his YouTube channel over the weekend, Romano explained the situation surrounding Scalvini and Newcastle, while suggesting the 22-year-old could be on the move next summer. 

“Scalvini was part of the conversation over the recent months about Newcastle. Is he going to Newcastle or not?

“The reality is that Newcastle were never close to signing Scalvini in the summer transfer window. He was not for sale for Atalanta and also Newcastle had different ideas (opted against signing a centre-back). 

“Scalvini is wanted by several clubs around Europe and I would keep a close eye on Scalvini maybe for summer 2027, but for now Scalvini signs a new contract at Atalanta and that’s important news because the deal has been signed today. Scalvini stays again at Atalanta.”

Atalanta have now officially confirmed that the 22-year-old has signed a new contract, extending his stay at the club, although that only protects his value, rather than act as any guarantee he’ll stay. 

A potential Schär replacement next summer?

This feels like one to keep an eye on, particularly with Fabian Schär’s current contract situation.

Schär is out of contract in 2027, and with Dan Burn also now 34, we’ll need to continue looking towards the next generation of central defenders. And Scalvini would certainly fit the profile based on recent, young overseas recruits with big potential. 

The 22-year-old is a tall, technically capable centre-back who is comfortable in possession and can operate in both a back three and back four. He has already made more than 140 senior appearances for Atalanta despite his relatively young age.

And this isn’t the first time Newcastle have been linked.

The Times reported in July 2025 that Newcastle had identified Scalvini as a major central-defensive target, with the Italian viewed as a potential long-term successor to Schär.

Newcastle’s interest then resurfaced in August 2026, when reports claimed the club had again made contact with Scalvini’s representatives and had also shown interest the previous summer.

There was even earlier Premier League interest around Scalvini, with Fabrizio Romano reporting back in October 2023 that two unnamed English clubs had been sending scouts to watch him.

So while Newcastle were never close to signing him this summer, this is clearly a player the club have monitored over a number of years.

With Romano now suggesting Scalvini could be one to watch for 2027, it certainly feels like one to watch as Schar approaches what may be his last season in black and white.
