Joelinton issues injury update - More good news for Matthias Jaissle
Joelinton has provided a hugely encouraging update on his recovery from injury, with the Newcastle United midfielder now targeting a return immediately after the international break.
The Brazilian has not played a single minute so far this season after suffering a quad injury in our pre-season clash with Bayer Leverkusen at St James’ Park, but he is now closing in on a return.
Joelinton targets return after international break
Joelinton has been sidelined since Newcastle’s 2-1 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in pre-season, missing the entire opening month of the 2026/27 campaign.
However, speaking to The Chronicle, the 30-year-old has revealed that his recovery is progressing well as he hopes to be back involved when we return to action away to Coventry City in two weeks.
“The plan is to be back after the international break. I am feeling really good. I have worked hard.
“I can’t wait to be back and be with the team, the boys and the new players in front of the fans again.
“I am feeling better. I can’t wait to be back on the pitch. I can’t wait to wear the shirt again and play for the fanbase again, I have really missed it.”
That would be a huge boost for Matthias Jaissle, with his newly appointed vice captain yet to feature in a competitive game under the new head coach.
Newcastle have been without the Brazilian throughout the opening seven games of the season, but his latest comments suggest there is now genuine hope of seeing him back after the three-week international break, which seems to have arrived at the perfect time.
Injuries finally clearing up on Tyneside?
It feels like we might finally be starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel after what has been a brutal opening period for injuries.
Club captain Dan Burn has already suggested that he could be back for the first game after the break, while Bosnia boss Sergej Barbarez has indicated that Amar Dedic should also be ready to return.
There has also been encouraging news on Anthony Elanga, with reports suggesting that his hamstring problem is not as serious as first feared and that there is now hope he can return after the break.
Nico Gonzalez will also be expected back after completing his recovery from concussion, while Will Osula is another player who is hoping to be involved when Newcastle return to action, now he’s out of a protective boot and able to train again.
After being forced to name four teenagers on the bench for the 2-1 win over Hull, getting several of those senior players back would be a huge boost for Jaissle.
And Joelinton could be one of the biggest additions of all if we can get the big man fit and firing again.
