Kyran Thompson scores brace for Newcastle after hidden call-up on Monday night
Kyran Thompson continued his impressive start to life at Newcastle United with a brace for the Under-21s on Tuesday night, just 24 hours after his trip to Coventry.
After being named on the bench against Hull City last month, the 17-year-old was spotted travelling with Matthias Jaissle’s senior squad for Monday night’s trip to Coventry, although he was not included among the substitutes this time.
His involvement with the first team is another sign of how highly he has impressed since arriving from Arsenal over the summer, and he displayed that once again last night.
Thompson scores twice in U21s win
Thompson was back in Under-21 action on Tuesday night as Newcastle travelled to Hartlepool United in the National League Cup, scoring twice in a 2-1 victory at Victoria Park.
The teenage winger opened the scoring in the ninth minute, finishing first-time from close range after Johnny Emerson delivered a low cross from the right.
Hartlepool equalised through Jack Nolan, but Thompson restored Newcastle’s lead in the 35th minute. His effort from the edge of the box took a deflection before squirming past the goalkeeper, securing his brace and ultimately proving the winner.
It was another encouraging performance from a player who has made an immediate impression since joining Newcastle from Arsenal in the summer, with the England Under-18 international also netting a goal and an assist at York on his Under-21s debut at York last month.
After starting the season with our Under-18s, Thompson is now showing his eye for goals at Under-21 level, and his recent involvement around the senior squad suggests his progress is being closely monitored.
Back to last night, Mason Miley also returned to the starting line-up, while goalkeeper Roman Dowell featured after their respective England youth team duties. Johnny Emerson and Afner Cá retained their places after impressing in Friday night’s 4-1 win over Luton Town Under-21s.
That's now back-to-back wins in all competitions for the first time this season, giving Robbie Stockdale’s side further momentum ahead of their return to Premier League 2 action.
Sunderland clash moved to St James’ Park
Newcastle have also confirmed a venue change for our upcoming Under-21s derby against Sunderland.
The Premier League 2 fixture, originally scheduled to take place at Whitley Park, will now be played at St James’ Park on Monday, 26th October at 7pm.
The move gives our young lads the experience of playing in a big stadium in front of our own supporters, with a local derby adding to what should be a game well worth attending for anyone free a week on Monday.
Tickets are priced at £5 for adults and £2 for juniors, while season ticket holders and Mags Members can attend for free.
With Thompson continuing to catch the eye and the Under-21s building some momentum, the derby promises to be an intriguing test for Stockdale’s young Mags and a chance to watch some of our top talents in the flesh.
