Newcastle Loan Watch: ‘Superb’ Finneran and updates on all 10 loanees

Rory Finneran earned more glowing reviews at Notts County, Ousmane Diabaté scored his first senior goal and Odysseas Vlachodimos kept a clean sheet for Sevilla in a mixed week for Newcastle’s loan players.

Rory Finneran earns rave reviews at Notts County

Finneran continues to make a very good impression at Meadow Lane, despite Notts County suffering a 1-0 home defeat to Bradford City on Saturday.

The 18-year-old made his fourth consecutive League One start and completed another full game, with the result doing little to dampen the praise for his midfield performance.

K-Ci Rennicks wrote:

“I’ll say it again though. Rory Finneran is just absolutely incredible. To play as consistently as he is at the age of 18 is just stupid. Boy is a star.

“Best bit of praise I can give him is that he is the exact player every prem club should show their young players currently on exactly how to go and use your loan to the best of your advantage.”

That assessment was backed up by Jamie Raynor, BBC Radio:

“Couldn’t agree more with this. Was amazed with how capable Finneran’s overall play was in central midfield, at just 18 as well. Notts County, and of course Newcastle United, have a serious player on their hands.”

Four starts, four full games and praise for his overall midfield play. That’s a cracking start for a teenager making the step into senior football. Up next for Notts County is a trip to Reading on Saturday, 19 September.

Ousmane Diabaté - Gençlerbirliği

Diabaté scored his first senior goal against Kasımpaşa on Sunday, opening the scoring after 23 minutes. He played the full game and was booked, but a stoppage-time winner condemned his side to a 2-1 defeat. We’ve already covered the strike in in this article, including the goal video. Up next is an away game at Başakşehir on Saturday, 19 September.

Odysseas Vlachodimos - Sevilla

A good Friday night for Vlachodimos, who kept a clean sheet as Sevilla beat Valencia 1-0 at home in La Liga. He has played every available minute during this season’s loan so far. Sevilla next travel to Deportivo La Coruña on Wednesday, 16 September.

Nick Woltemade - Juventus

Woltemade came on after an hour with Sunday’s game at Sassuolo still goalless. All five goals followed in a dramatic 3-2 Juventus defeat, with the Newcastle striker heading a late chance wide from a corner. Up next for Juventus is a home Europa League meeting with NEC Nijmegen on Thursday, 17 September.

Anthony Munda - Swindon Town

A difficult Saturday for Munda as Swindon lost 4-0 at York City in League Two. He started and played 77 minutes, leaving the pitch with his side already three goals behind. Swindon next host Crystal Palace Under-21s in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday, 15 September.

Alex Murphy - Kaiserslautern

Murphy started Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Magdeburg in Germany’s second tier. He was substituted shortly after the hour, with all three goals having already been conceded. Up next is a home game against Eintracht Braunschweig on Saturday, 19 September.

Antonio Cordero - Cádiz

Cordero came off the bench in the 58th minute of Saturday’s home meeting with Las Palmas. The visitors scored two minutes later and held on for a 1-0 win, with the Newcastle winger also picking up a booking. Cádiz next host Girona on Saturday, 19 September.

Sean Neave - Wolves

Neave was an unused substitute as Wolves won 1-0 at Sheffield United on Sunday. A positive result for his loan club, but no Championship minutes for the young striker this time. Wolves next travel to Everton in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, 16 September.

Leo Shahar - Arouca

Shahar wasn’t included in Arouca’s matchday squad for Sunday’s 2-1 home defeat to Santa Clara and is still waiting for his first competitive minutes at the club. Up next is a trip to Sporting CP on Saturday, 19 September.

Harrison Ashby - Luton Town

Ashby missed Thursday’s 2-1 defeat at Stevenage through injury, having suffered a groin problem against Leyton Orient. Luton next host Bradford City on Saturday, 19 September.

Who is getting the minutes?

Finneran and Vlachodimos have played every available minute during their current loans this season, with Diabaté and Munda also getting plenty of football.
