Newcastle United's opening game of 2026/27 season to be broadcast live
Newcastle United could hardly have asked for a worse start to the new season, with Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur the first two fixtures up for the Magpies.
The one saving grace is that the season opener against Liverpool is at least at St James' Park and not the pit of perpetual defeats that is Anfield. Although our record at home against The Reds is hardly anything to get excited about.
Liverpool are already urinating on Newcastle's bonfire in the transfer market, and the window hasn't even been open a week.
Victor Munoz had agreed to join Newcastle United. Terms were agreed with the club and the player, and yet Liverpool still managed to muscle in and steal him from out of our grasp.
We can't wait to listen to Sky Sports gush over Liverpool for an hour
Knowing Liverpool, it probably won't be the last time this happens over the summer, either, so we can imagine what the rhetoric is going to be pre-kick-off on the opening day.
And we will hear all about it endlessly in Dolby Surround Sound in UHD as Sky Sports will broadcast the fixture live with a 4:30pm kick-off time on Sunday 23rd August.
If we're lucky, Newcastle might get a mention in the hour preceding kick-off, but we can already tell that all the talking will be about Andoni Iraola and the new era of Liverpool and their fantastic summer transfer window in which they spent another half a billion pounds.
Spurs is also likely to be selected for broadcast
In case you haven't noticed, we are still quite bitter about the whole Victor Munoz thing.
While only the opening fixtures have been confirmed for broadcast right now, we wouldn't be surprised if our second game, the trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, gets picked up for TV too, especially if Spurs' audacious bid for Sandro Tonali comes off.
Then of course, we'll have to sit through another hour of Spurs-fest while Newcastle is relegated to a note of "oh and they're here too".
