Newcastle’s Kyran Thompson named in The Guardian’s 2026 Next Generation

Newcastle United winger Kyran Thompson has been named among The Guardian’s 2026 Next Generation, with the highly-rated teenager recognised as one of the standout young talents at Premier League clubs.

The annual list features 20 players born between 1 September 2009 and 31 August 2010, with one youngster selected from each Premier League club.

Thompson named top Toon talent

Thompson, who turned 17 in September, has enjoyed a rapid rise since making the summer switch from Arsenal to Newcastle.

His move was followed by a first professional contract, a goal for the Under-21s in the EFL Trophy at York, a place on the first-team bench against Hull in our last Premier League game and a prominent role as England U18s reached the final of the UEFA Friendship Cup.

Writing about the Newcastle winger, The Guardian’s Louise Taylor highlighted his previous experience with Arsenal and his impressive development since arriving on Tyneside, while Steve Harper described Thompson as “an exciting player with real potential and a hunger to keep improving.”

Thompson himself also outlined the qualities he believes are among his biggest strengths, saying: “My strengths are dribbling, drifting inside and being able to play the ball in behind. I’m a technical player who likes to create chances and score goals for the team.”

Another big step forward for Newcastle’s latest Academy talent

Thompson played regularly for Arsenal’s younger age groups before making the move north, including appearances in the UEFA Youth League, and Newcastle clearly saw enough to hand him a five-year professional contract on his 17th birthday.

His progress has continued quickly since then, with that first U21 goal at York followed by his involvement around the first-team squad and international experience with England U18s, where he featured regularly on the right wing throughout the Friendship Cup.

There is still a long way to go for the lad, but with Thompson now receiving recognition alongside some of the most highly-rated young players across the Premier League, it feels like we may have another young gem on our hands.
