Ousmane Diabate signs for Newcastle as Ross Wilson reveals rival interest

Newcastle United have finally announced the signing of 18-year-old midfielder Ousmane Diabate from Gençlerbirliği.

The Guinea international will spend the rest of the 2026/27 season back on loan with the Turkish club before joining Newcastle next summer, allowing him to keep playing regular senior football.

It's been a strange wait for the official announcement. We reported last night that Diabate had appeared on Newcastle's Premier League squad list, weeks after his move and loan-back plan first emerged.

Speaking in his first interview with the club, Diabate explained why the move appealed to him:

“From the moment Newcastle showed interest, I knew it was the kind of ambitious club I wanted to be part of. The project here is exciting, and the supporters have an incredible reputation.”

Ross Wilson also revealed Newcastle had competition for the midfielder and praised the club's scouting work:

“He's been on the radar of a number of clubs, so we're delighted he sees his future here with us - credit to our scouting team for identifying him early and working hard to get the deal done.”

There are already encouraging signs from his start to the season.

Diabate has started all three of Gençlerbirliği's Süper Lig matches so far this season in central midfield, playing 255 of a possible 270 minutes and registering an assist.

Gençlerbirliği have taken seven points from those three games, including wins over Fenerbahçe and Göztepe, so he's hardly gone back there to sit on the bench.

That's exactly what Newcastle will want. Rather than spending the season in Under-21 football, Diabate is already getting proper top-flight minutes at 18.

Very much one for the future, but he's already started the season well and gives us another youngster worth keeping an eye on.
