Ousmane Diabate set to join Newcastle - Medical booked and loan plans in place

Last night, reports in Turkey suggested that Newcastle United were in talks to sign 18-year-old midfielder Ousmane Diabate.

Spor Depor's Resat Can Ozbudak claimed that discussions were underway over his move from Gençlerbirliği, and it seems those talks have progressed at a rapid rate.

Not only has the Turkish journalist followed this up by claiming the Guinea international is on his way for a medical, but sources closer to home are now confirming that a deal is set to be wrapped up.

Newcastle win Diabate race

Newcastle United have won the race to sign highly-rated defensive midfielder Ousmane Diabate.

Following up on the developing stories from Turkey, The Mail's Craig Hope confirms that a permanent move to St James' Park is now close to completion after Newcastle held off interest from several European clubs.

Once the formalities are completed, Diabate is then expected to return to Turkish side Gençlerbirliği, rejoining his current club on loan for the remainder of the 2026/27 season.

There are no details on the fee, although it is likely to be a low-cost addition given his age and lack of experience, making just eight club appearances at senior level to this point.

Diabate started the opening game of the season in Turkey, playing in Gençlerbirliği's 2-1 win over Fenerbahce last Saturday.

Immediate loan a smart move

A move back to continue his development at senior level makes sense, as he has only recently broken into the Super Lig side's first team, playing eight times in all competitions after shining in their youth side.

A similar route may also be prepared for Ecuadorian addition Johan Martinez, 17, who will arrive on his 18th birthday next year, while Under-21 addition Afner Ca, 19, may also be loaned out to help his development.

Brentford and Spurs had previously been credited with an interest in Diabate, but it looks like Newcastle and Ross Wilson have beaten our Premier League rivals to the 6ft 1' Guinean.
