Ross Wilson reacts as Newcastle sign Afner Ca from Levante
Newcastle United have snapped up free agent Afner Cá after the 19-year-old left La Liga side Levante.
Just a couple of weeks after turning 19, Guinea-Bissau striker Afner Cá has found himself a new club after his contract with Levante expired.
Despite interest from Spanish sides Valencia and Villarreal, the teenager opted to join Newcastle United.
In his first interview with the club, Afner Cá spoke about how the project and lifestyle at Newcastle made him choose the Premier League side.
Ross Wilson is excited to see Afner Cá develop
Speaking to the club's official website, sporting director Ross Wilson said he was excited to work with Cá and watch him develop through the academy.
“We’re pleased to see Afner join our Academy. He’s an exciting profile who has shown real growth over the last couple of seasons, having developed well during this time in both Portugal and Spain.
“We’re committed to adding talented young players who can grow with us. We’re excited to work with him in our development programme.”
Steve Harper praised Newcastle's recruitment
Academy director Steve Harper praised the recruitment team's efforts after bringing in another talented young star for him to work with.
“Afner is another good example of the excellent work our recruitment team continues to do in identifying young players who have the potential to thrive here. We’ve built a clear pathway here for players to grow, and Afner joins a group who are hungry to develop and push themselves.
“He’s had valuable experiences in Portugal and Spain, and now he’ll have the opportunity to continue that progression within our Academy environment. We’re looking forward to helping him settle, supporting his development, and seeing how he takes to the challenge.”
