Thank you Spain for saving the beautiful game - just

Sunday night was the World Cup final in New York as Spain played some training dummies in Argentina kits.

As a spectacle, it was by far the worst World Cup final in my lifetime for so very many reasons.

Argentina have cheated their way to the final and was determined to cheat their way to the trophy too. They had no intention of playing the game. They didn't even have a shot for 117 minutes. It was absolutely awful stuff.

FIFA tried its hardest to make its golden boys win with some absolutely laughable decisions going against Spain, least of all the disallowed goal in the second half, which I'm still not sure what it was actually ruled out for.

What was going on?

Outside of the actual game, there was so much wrong with this final, in fact, the whole tournament, as it was overly Americanised with the hydration breaks that were brought in purely to give the Yanks an extra ad break and to break the game up into quarters because their attention spans can't hack 45 minutes solid.

The inclusion of Bruce and Michael Buffer shouting their heads off, winners' rings and that god-awful halftime show. It was just rancid. All of it. And don't get me started on the Sentient Tangerine and his influence on things.

Had Argentina managed to win this final, the backlash would have been immense, as there was an almost universal feeling that FIFA were rigging it for them.

Thankfully, Ferran Torres was on hand to rob the Argentinians of the crown with a stoppage-time goal and then former Newcastle United man Mikel Merino took one for the team, putting his face in the way of a Lionel Messi shot.

FIFA needs an overhaul

We're still amazed that Enzo Fernandez was given the red card he blatantly deserved, and there was even a post-match red card for Leandro Paredes, who chose violence as a method of coping with defeat.

Spain winning has kept the game alive, as if Argentina had won this game after all they've done, all of their awful brand of UFC-ball and all of this rotten Americanisation, it would have been so hard for the game to come back from this.

As things stand, FIFA are on shaky ground as it is, with football fans from all over the world sick of their corruption. But what can be done? Hopefully, something.
