WATCH: Bruno Guimaraes’ brilliant assist sets up last gasp win for Brazil

Bruno Guimaraes was in World Cup action on Monday evening as Brazil booked their place in the next round of the tournament - just.

Japan have once again impressed at a major tournament, but, as has become a tradition, they once again took the lead in a knockout match only to lose.

Bruno Guimaraes started the game brilliantly for Brazil, going close on a couple of occasions, but it was Japan who broke the deadlock with a decisive counter-attack via Kodai Sano.

Casemiro nodded home in the second half to level things up for Brazil after a rotten first half in which all of ITV's pundits agreed was poor enough that he should be hooked at half-time.

Bruno's assist was a thing of beauty

Japan sat back and absorbed Brazil's pressure brilliantly for the rest of the game, and after the board went up for six minutes of stoppage time, it felt like extra time was inevitable.

However, Bruno Guimaraes and substitute Gabriel Martinelli had different plans. Bruno received the ball on the edge of the area, and while it looked as though he was squaring up to shoot, he was waiting for Japan's defenders to rush out.

With that mission accomplished, Bruno was able to fire a perfect left-footed pass into Martinelli, who took a touch before firing into the bottom corner. Watch it all below!

Bruno is top of the pops

That is Bruno Guimaraes' fourth assist of the tournament, which is the most of anyone. Although Michael Olise of France and some guy called Alexander Isak are on three, and both are still in the competition.

It was far from a vintage performance by Brazil, and we're still not convinced they've got what it takes to win the tournament, but Bruno Guimaraes has been absolutely incredible.

With all the talk around his future, Newcastle would do well to get him tied down to another deal.
