WATCH: Nico Gonzalez meets Alan Shearer after £50m Newcastle move

Newcastle United have released a behind-the-scenes look at Nico Gonzalez’s first 24 hours on Tyneside, including his first meeting with Alan Shearer and Nobby Solano.

The 24-year-old completed his move from Manchester City on Wednesday, signing a long-term contract and taking the number six shirt. The transfer has been widely reported at around £50m.

Nico meets Shearer and Nobby

The footage follows Gonzalez through the usual signing-day routine, including his medical, contract signing, media duties and first introductions to staff and teammates.

Anthony Elanga welcomes him in Spanish, Nick Woltemade makes an immediate effort to introduce himself and Matthias Jaissle looks delighted to finally have his new midfielder through the door.

The most Newcastle moment comes at St James’ Park, where Gonzalez is introduced to Shearer and Solano. Not a bad welcome. Sign your contract, meet two club legends and then get sent out in front of a packed stadium.

Gonzalez appears relaxed throughout the video, but the smile barely leaves his face. Considering he had been struggling for regular football at Manchester City, it is easy to see why being made to feel this important from day one might appeal.

St James’ Park delivers immediately

Gonzalez had already played at St James’ Park twice for Man City and spoke about how difficult the atmosphere made those visits.

“I can’t wait to experience that as a home player,” he said after signing. He did not have to wait long.

Before Wednesday’s 3-2 win over West Brom, Gonzalez walked out at St James’ Park in black and white as supporters chanted his name. The video captures his reaction to the noise, and he looks genuinely taken aback by it. It was a brilliant moment and, unless I’m forgetting one, Newcastle’s first on-pitch unveiling since the two-for-one introduction of Anthony Gordon and Harrison Ashby.

Signing-day videos do not win midfield battles, obviously. But after such a turbulent summer, it is good to see a major arrival who looks absolutely delighted to be here.

The introductions are now done. Jaissle says Nico has trained, looked sharp and could make his Newcastle debut against Tottenham on Saturday.
