WATCH: Rory Finneran scores superb goal as impressive Notts County loan continues
Rory Finneran opened his account for Notts County on Saturday with a superb strike against Oxford United, offering another reminder of his potential during an impressive loan spell away from Newcastle United.
The Republic of Ireland U21 international has continued to catch the eye since joining the League One side, with his energy, drive and quality on the ball making him an exciting prospect to follow.
Finneran scores first goal for Notts County
Finneran found the net in stoppage time during Saturday’s clash at Meadow Lane, producing a brilliant 18-yard strike to give Notts County hope of a late comeback against Oxford United.
The Newcastle youngster’s effort halved the deficit after goals from Mark Harris and Cameron Brannagan had put the visitors in control, but County were unable to find an equaliser and fell to a 2-1 defeat.

Despite the disappointing result, it was a memorable moment for the midfielder to net his first goal in senior football, as he continues to gain valuable first team experience with Notts County.
The 18-year-old has impressed with his performances in the middle of the park, showing composure beyond his years and offering a glimpse of the qualities that convinced Newcastle to bring him in from Blackburn two years go.
Shades of Sandro Tonali?
There are already some similarities between Finneran’s energetic midfield style and that of former Mag Sandro Tonali.
The teenager brings plenty of drive to the middle of the park, showing a willingness to cover ground, get involved in challenges and carry the ball forward when opportunities arise. Watching this clip below on his League One debut, it's easy to see why the comparison has been made.
His strike against Oxford also highlighted his ball-striking ability, with the midfielder showing confidence to take aim from distance, just as the Italian did from time to time on Tyneside.
Finneran is still at an early stage of his development, and comparisons with an established Premier League midfielder should be treated with caution. However, his energy, aggression and ability to drive his team forward make for an exciting combination.
Regular football in League One is providing the Ireland U21 international with an opportunity to develop physically and tactically while adapting to the demands of senior football.
Newcastle will be keeping a close eye on his progress, and if he continues to perform at this level, Finneran could be in for a Championship loan in 2027, if not more.
