WATCH: The moment Dan Burn landed Newcastle captaincy as Joelinton secures vice role
Jaissle has made a major move ahead of the 2026/27 season as Dan Burn has been appointed Newcastle's United's new club captain.
The local man from Blyth has had a career path. From Asda and lower-league football, to moving to your boyhood club and playing for your country. Dan Burn has now taken the next step, taking up the captain's armband for Newcastle.
Dan Burn returned to the club this past week, and Jaissle was quick to comment on how important he was around the club. With just a week to go, Burn has been rewarded with the top job as a player.
Dan Burn takes captain role
Dan Burn was confirmed by the club as the captain after the loss to Leverkusen. Burn is expected to start the second of two SJP friendlies on Sunday, against Ligue 1 side Strasbourg.
Speaking about the news, Burn said:
“It’s an absolute honour to be named captain of Newcastle United.
"It’s always an immense privilege to represent this football club, especially when I have been trusted with the armband on previous occasions, but to lead the team on a permanent basis is going to be really special.“
Burn always said he thought his chance to join Newcastle United ended when the takeover happened. Just five years later, he’s now the captain.
“It’s been an incredible journey since I joined the club four-and-a-half years ago – we’ve achieved some amazing things together and enjoyed some unforgettable moments.
"I believe there’s still more to come and I’m relishing the responsibility of pushing everybody every single day to make sure that is the case.”
Jaissle was quick to add his thoughts on Burn:
“Dan is a natural leader and a perfect fit for the role of Newcastle United captain. He puts the interests of the team ahead of his own every time he steps onto the pitch and always gives maximum commitment in everything he does.“
Joelinton has also been appointed the club’s vice captain, although he will be missing for at least the next two weeks after picking up an injury.
A top choice
Malick Thiaw had taken the captain armband in two of the three preseason games, performing well in today's 2-1 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.
But with Burn having experience, club knowledge, and time at the club, it makes a lot of sense to hand the Blyth man the armband.
With a full leadership group likely to be announced in due time, we expect Thiaw will join that larger group.
Should Burn become a regular starter alongside Thiaw, it gives the club a good leadership pair in defence, unless Botman can get back to his best.
