Newcastle exploring deal to sign Pierre-Emil Hojbjerg
Newcastle have work to do over the final month of the summer transfer window.
After plenty of change, be it managerial or the loss of several senior players, it's vital we not only improve the squad between now and September 1st, but also add some quality to the starting 11 following Bruno Guimaraes' £75m exit.
There's talk that we'll make "at least" three signings over the coming weeks, and some have suggested that we'll look to replace Bruno by adding a mixture of experience and creativity to the side.
On that note, experience would certainly arrive should Newcastle pursue a move for Pierre-Emil Hojbjerg, who has emerged as a very possible option.
Hojbjerg deal discussed
Newcastle United are exploring a move for Marseille captain and Danish international Pierre-Emil Hojbjerg.
A flurry of reports on Friday evening have confirmed that Newcastle are now considering a deal that would bring the 31-year-old to St James' Park, with North East journalists Keith Downie, Luke Edwards and Craig Hope all revealing our interest in the Dane in the last few moments.
Hojberg, formerly of Spurs and Southampton, currently plays in France with Marseille, who could be willing to part with their skipper for a fee in the region of £15m.
Leadership? Yes. Bruno replacement? No.
Many have seen the news and worried that we've set the bar low if Hojbjerg is THE Bruno replacement at Newcastle.
Thankfully, I don't think he is. Newcastle remain in the market for a creative player, but we desperately need leaders, calm heads and respected voices.
Not only have we signed one 18-year-old, three 20-year-olds and one 24-year-old this summer, but we've just lost leaders Trippier, Lascelles and Bruno, making the need for strong, senior voices all the more important as we head into a new era filled with young, inexperienced talent.
I'm confident any move for Hojbjerg would be a deal to add leadership to the group, and one that would be followed by the addition of a creative spark.
