Newcastle Loan Watch: Woltemade scores, Ashby sees red and Shahar waits

Nick Woltemade scored his first Juventus goal, Sean Neave earned a full game against Premier League opposition and Harrison Ashby saw red during another eventful week for Newcastle’s loan players.

Leo Shahar, meanwhile, is still waiting to get on the pitch in Portugal.

What is Leo Shahar getting from this loan?

I’m sure Leo Shahar is building up quite the tan, but what is the point of this loan move so far?

The right-back was again absent from Arouca’s matchday squad as they earned an impressive 2-2 draw away to Sporting CP on Saturday. Three league games have passed since his arrival and he has yet to play a competitive minute.

Hopefully the break gives him time to work his way into contention. Up next for Arouca is a home game against Estrela da Amadora on Sunday, 11 October.

This week’s loan roundup

Nick Woltemade - Juventus

Big Nick started Thursday’s Europa League meeting with NEC Nijmegen, played 83 minutes and scored a 35th-minute penalty in Juventus’ 5-0 win.

That got him off the mark for his new club, although he was back among the substitutes against Atalanta on Sunday, coming on in the 86th minute of a 2-0 victory. Up next for Juventus is a trip to Cagliari on Sunday, 11 October.

Sean Neave - Wolves

A much more substantial week for Neave than his brief appearance in Sunday’s Black Country derby might suggest.

He played the full 90 minutes in Wednesday’s 1-0 Carabao Cup defeat at Everton, creating a good second-half chance for Adam Armstrong after getting past Vitalii Mykolenko. He then came on after 88 minutes as Wolves protected their 1-0 lead against West Brom.

Those cup minutes were a welcome opportunity against Premier League opposition. Wolves next visit Middlesbrough on Saturday, 10 October.

Odysseas Vlachodimos - Sevilla

Vlachodimos kept his second consecutive clean sheet in Wednesday’s 1-0 win at Deportivo La Coruña, following the shutout against Valencia covered last week.

Barcelona brought that run to an end on Saturday, coming from behind to win 3-1 in Seville. The Greek goalkeeper played both games in full and remains an ever-present this season. Sevilla next travel to Levante on Monday, 12 October.

Alex Murphy - Kaiserslautern

A good response to last weekend’s defeat at Magdeburg. Murphy completed the full 90 minutes as Kaiserslautern beat Eintracht Braunschweig 1-0 at home on Saturday.

It was his first full game of the loan, with a clean sheet to go with it. Hopefully something to build on when Kaiserslautern return to action away to Heidenheim on Friday, 9 October.

Rory Finneran - Notts County

Finneran completed another 90 minutes on Saturday, although Notts County suffered a 2-0 defeat at Reading.

That makes it five starts and five full games since his move. The results have dipped, but the consistent opportunity remains a real positive for the 18-year-old. Up next is a home game against Grimsby Town in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday, 22 September.

Ousmane Diabaté - Gençlerbirliği

A difficult follow-up to his first senior goal. Diabaté started Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at Başakşehir and played 62 minutes, leaving the pitch with his side already three goals behind.

He has started all three league games since becoming a Newcastle player and returning on loan. Gençlerbirliği next host Amed Sportif on Saturday, 10 October.

Anthony Munda - Swindon Town

Munda was absent from the squad for Tuesday’s 2-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace Under-21s in the EFL Trophy.

He returned to the starting line-up at Salford on Saturday, playing the full game on the right of a midfield three as Swindon lost 1-0. Another frustrating result, but his sixth consecutive league start. Swindon next host Newport County in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday, 22 September.

Antonio Cordero - Cádiz

Cordero came on after an hour of Saturday’s home game against Girona, with Cádiz trailing 2-1.

Operating on the right this time, he played the remaining 30 minutes, but there was no further scoring. That’s two successive substitute appearances after starting the opening four league games. Cádiz next travel to Tenerife on Saturday, 26 September.

Harrison Ashby - Luton Town

An afternoon to forget against his former loan club. Ashby returned to the starting line-up for Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat to Bradford, then was sent off in the fifth minute of added time after kicking out at an opponent.

After missing the previous game through injury, that was a needless way to end his return. Luton next host Ipswich Town Under-21s in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday, 22 September.

Who is getting the minutes?

Finneran and Vlachodimos retain their perfect records, while Neave’s full cup appearance gives his total a much-needed lift. Shahar remains the only player yet to feature for his loan club.
