Newcastle miss out on Viery as Fiorentina strike deal
Newcastle United have been linked a few times with Gremio defender Viery this summer.
The Magpies have been credited with an interest in the 21-year-old Brazilian centre-back, but it looks as though they're about to miss out.
It was reported that Newcastle had bid £10m for Viery back in May before Sunderland were thought to have entered the race.
However, it now looks as though the Gremio star is heading to Italy rather than testing himself in the Premier League.
Viery is heading to Fiorentina
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Newcastle target Viery is on his way to Italy, with Fiorentina striking a deal.
He reports that the Brazilian will cost €15m plus €2m add-ons, giving it the 'here we go' sign off in a recent post on X.
Journalist Alex Bagé has also confirmed that Viery has agreed a move to Fiorentina in a record-breaking deal
"SOLD TO FIORENTINA.
"THE BIGGEST SALE OF A CENTER BACK IN THE HISTORY OF GAÚCHO FOOTBALL.
"DEAL SURPASSES THE 17 MILLION EURO MARK."
€17m is around £14 million, so the Italian side have out-bid Newcastle if that initial bid story was true.
More negativity to set you up for the weekend
We're not going to lose any sleep over missing out on Viery per se, but it is nonetheless another story about Newcastle not signing a player rather than one about them actually bringing one in.
Again, there's plenty of time to go, but I wrote that about 100 times last year, too, and we still ended up waiting until the last minute to do any kind of business and, well, how'd that turn out?
Can we PLEASE have a positive incoming transfer story to chew on next week? Is it too much to ask?
