Sunderland join race for Viery following reports of Newcastle bid
Last month, it was reported that Newcastle United had submitted a £10m bid for Brazilian defender Veiry.
Brazilian journalist Fabio Vargas claimed that Newcastle had submitted a bid for the Gremio defender.
Newcastle had been keeping tabs on the 21-year-old centre-back, so a bid didn't seem like an unrealistic outcome.
However, since that report dropped, it has all gone quiet on the Viery front, which suggests that Vargas' claims may have been more based in fiction than reality.
Sunderland and Spurs enter the race for Viery
There may well be genuine interest from Newcastle in the young defender, but a new report from Portal do Gremista in Brazil has claimed that two more Premier League sides have entered the race, one of which is none other than Sunderland.
Tottenham Hotspur is the other side credited with an interest. A three-way Premier League face-off could be interesting.
The report claims that Newcastle's £10m bid was rejected, but The Chronicle claims no bid was made; Portal do Gremista also claims that an unnamed Premier League club has since tabled a £14.6m bid.
Newcastle v Sunderland in the transfer market will be interesting
We can only assume that the bid is from one of the aforementioned trio, though we suspect it's not Newcastle.
Going up against Sunderland in the transfer market will add a bit of extra spice. The Mackems were reportedly keen on Victor Munoz before Newcastle pushed their way to the front of the queue for the Spanish winger.
It's worth remembering, because it's so bizarre, that Sunderland can offer European football next season, which could give them an edge in negotiations.
We'll see how this one pans out, as Ross Wilson is moving quickly this summer, it seems, which is excellent news.
