Newcastle set for summer overhaul with several senior stars at risk - Report
Everyone is expecting plenty of changes to Newcastle United's squad this summer, especially in the wake of such a difficult season.
The plan was always to have a squad refresh ahead of next season, but the misfiring squad this season has made the situation all the more desperate.
Newcastle's failures this season have also opened the door for big clubs to come looking to offer our more ambitious players a way out, with the likes of Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Tino Livramento all linked with moves away.
As things stand, only Kieran Trippier and John Ruddy are confirmed to be leaving the club at the end of the season, but there are eight other players who potentially have a foot out the door.
Newcastle's ageing squad will be overhauled
That's according to a report in The Telegraph, which identifies several players who are 'coming to the end of their shelf life', and with Ross Wilson determined to lower the average age of the squad, we may see older players sold.
Kieran Trippier (35) and John Ruddy (39) are already set to leave, but that leaves Dan Burn (33), Jacob Murphy (31), Fabian Schar (34) and Nick Pope (34), all the wrong side of 30 and at risk of sale. Schar's contract is due to expire at the end of the season, and he is likely to leave, but the rest are still under contract.
Meanwhile, we have Gordon, Tonali, Livramento and Joe Willock who are all in the shop window and with one eye on a move away. Joe Willock is the one most likely to be pushing for a move as he has fallen down the pecking order of late, while the other three are generating plenty of interest.
Not everyone mentioned will leave
Not all of the aforementioned players will leave the club in the upcoming window, and the club may even fight to keep a few of them, but it is looking like the squad is going to have a very different feel next season.
Three of the players listed there, Willock, Murphy and Schar, were at the club before the takeover and, honestly, we're surprised we still have pre-takeover players in the squad, especially given where we were before the PIF came in.
Emil Krafth is another one who wasn't mentioned by The Telegraph. At 31 and with his contract up at the end of the season, he's likely to leave too.
Joelinton is the pre-takeover player who may be immune to this way of thinking. He's the poster boy of what can be achieved with good coaching and stands apart from the rest.
