WATCH: France turn on style to send Anthony Elanga back to Newcastle

Anthony Elanga became the latest Newcastle United representative at the World Cup to be sent home after Sweden were knocked out of the competition by a France masterclass.

Newcastle's World Cup representation has been halved this week as the number was chopped from six to three.

Bruno Guimaraes remains in the Americas as he helped Brazil through to the Round of 16 on Monday. However, Malick Thiaw and Nick Woltemade were sent packing by Miguel Almiron's Paraguay following a penalty shootout.

One of either Dan Burn or Yoane Wissa will be reaching for their passports tonight following England vs DR Congo, which kicks off at 5pm.

To think Newcastle were after Michael Olise

Sweden were utterly outclassed by France last night, and with a brace by Kylian Mbappe and one from Bradley Barcola, a 3-0 scoreline almost seemed like a let-off for Elanga and co.

Michael Olise put on another amazing show for France, pulling all the strings from the midfield. He provided two more assists, which takes him above Bruno Guimaraes in the assists table now.

He almost scored the goal of the tournament too with an audacious bicycle kick on the edge of the area that hit the post. To think Newcastle were in for him at one point. If only.

A new Elanga is coming home

Anthony Elanga returns to Newcastle looking like a different player from the one who left. The £55m winger should be able to hold his head up high after what he's achieved out there this summer.

If Elanga can bring that confidence back to the Toon with him and apply it at club level, then we're really looking forward to seeing him in action next season.

Eddie Howe never gave up on him even when we all did. It's time for him to prove everybody wrong, and if he plays for us like he did for Sweden, then he's going to do just that.
