WATCH: Nick Woltemade’s penalty disaster as Newcastle duo are dumped out World Cup
Newcastle United's 100% World Cup participation came to a crushing end last night as Germany were dumped out of the competition by Paraguay, sending Nick Woltemade and Malick Thiaw back to Tyneside.
Former Toon star Miguel Almiron was in action for Paraguay while Nick Woltemade and Malick Thiaw both made appearances off the bench for Germany, but their involvement wasn't enough to secure progression.
Paraguay took the lead on 42 minutes via former Brighton man Julio Enciso after what was a pretty dull half of football. Germany was very reminiscent of England in that they had all of the ball and zero ideas of what to do with it.
Germany tried more and more to force the issue in the second half and were eventually rewarded for their efforts when Kai Havertz levelled things up.
We finally got to see Nick Woltemade in action
The introduction of Nick Woltemade to get on the end of crosses made little to no difference as the Newcastle striker failed to get on the end of anything. He did manage one shot on target, which was blocked by the brick wall, Jose Canale.
Jonathan Tah looked to have won the game for Germany in the second half of extra time with a powerful header, but just as the game was about to get underway again, VAR intervened and ruled the goal out for the slightest of touches on the Paraguay goalkeeper. It was a shocking decision, but it added to the drama if nothing else.
With no winner, the game went to penalties, and that's where Newcastle fans were expecting Nick Woltemade to shine. With memories of the penalty against Nottingham Forest, it seemed almost inevitable that Big Nick would deliver.
With Germany having already missed one, the pressure was on Woltemade, but the Toon's record signing fluffed his lines. Thankfully for him, Paraguay went on to miss their final two spot kicks of the initial five, but Jonathan Tah, who thought he'd won the game once already, blazed over the bar, and Jose Canale slotted home to send Paraguay through.
Can Nick Woltemade bounce back?
We waited so long to see Nick Woltemade in World Cup action, hoping that it would help him get his confidence back, but instead he goes and misses a spot kick in a penalty shootout. That's going to stick with him.
It will probably be Jonathan Tah who will feel the worst, as it was ultimately his satellite killer that ended Germany's hopes, but Woltemade will feel like he had one job at the tournament and failed.
Hopefully, he can bounce back and do what Yoane Wissa has done with his poor season and use it as fuel to improve and prove people wrong.
