Newcastle make Javi Rodríguez enquiry as Premier League trio circle - Report
Newcastle United have reportedly made an enquiry for Celta Vigo defender Javi Rodríguez, with Everton and Fulham doing the same. Paris Saint-Germain have also made an initial approach for the 23-year-old.
The claim comes from Faro de Vigo on 28th August, relayed in English by Sport Witness. Faro was founded in 1853 and is widely described as Spain’s oldest newspaper still in circulation, so this is worth taking more seriously than the average late-window name thrown our way.
Rodríguez is under contract until 2028 and reportedly has a €40m release clause, which is roughly £34m. Nobody is said to have triggered that clause, or even made an offer. The suggestion is simply that Celta could receive a sizeable bid before the window closes.
A centre-back first, right-back second
Rodríguez joined Celta’s academy at the age of seven and made his senior debut in November 2023. He has already made almost 90 first-team appearances and earned his senior Spain debut against Iraq on 4th June.
Despite the versatility tag, he is primarily a centre-back. Sport Witness reports that only six of his 90 senior appearances have come at right-back. Newcastle would not be signing a right-back who can fill in centrally. They would be signing another central defender who can cover the flank when required.
This is the first direct Newcastle transfer link, but Rodríguez is not completely new to NUFC Blog. We included him in our 2025 centre-back scout report, highlighting his confidence in possession and ability to progress the ball, while questioning how his aerial game and physicality would translate to England.
Does another defender really make sense?
Not as a priority.
Newcastle have already completed Amar Dedić’s £29.5m arrival, giving Matthias Jaissle a full-back capable of playing on either side.
Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman, Fabian Schär, Dan Burn and Miodrag Pivas provide the central options. Even after Burn’s ankle injury, Keith Downie reported that Newcastle were unlikely to respond by signing another centre-back.
I would take the Faro report seriously enough not to dismiss it completely. Rodríguez is young, comfortable on the ball and could be viewed as longer-term succession planning. An opportunistic deal well below his release clause might change the calculation.
The final days of this window need to be about attack. Newcastle hope to add two more attacking players, and the obvious priorities are more threat from the right and another option who can play centrally up front. Spending serious money and recruitment time on another centre-back would be difficult to justify unless Rodríguez has suddenly become an exceptional market opportunity.
There is also a small Spanish connection now that new boy Nico González is in the dressing room. Having a fellow Spaniard around could help Rodríguez settle if a move ever happened, but it does not make Newcastle’s reported interest any stronger.
Rodríguez looks an interesting player and the source is credible enough to keep this one on the radar. For Newcastle, though, it feels more like a contingency or market-opportunity enquiry than a priority deal.
