New injury fear explained after Newcastle star man sits out international win

It's been a tough few weeks for Newcastle United when it comes to injury setbacks, especially at the back.

Tino Livramento is set to miss another six weeks following a knee ligament injury, while Lewis Hall is set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up a hamstring issue in our 4-0 win over Union SG last Wednesday.

With our two left-back options ruled out, it was a concern for fans to see Dan Burn's hand heavily strapped and fail to feature in England's 3-0 win over Wales last night.

The 6ft 7' Geordie has been a key part of Thomas Tuchel's England side since his first call-up in March, but his absence as an unused substitute has now been explained as the big man from Blyth nurses a broken hand.

Burn reveals that he has seen a specialist and has broken a bone in his left hand following scans. However, the 33-year-old has been told he CAN play through to pain and is ready to start; whether that's against Latvia next week or for Newcastle's trip to Brighton a week tomorrow.

Speaking to The Chronicle from Wembley last night, Burn said: “I actually broke my hand, I don’t even know how I did it, I think I went to grab someone and then I felt a crack.

"It was early in the second half (against Nottingham Forest last Sunday), so I went for the scan and I have seen a specialist.

“I’ve been told I can play with it. I am ready for Latvia, I am ready for Newcastle and I’d have been ready to play tonight.

“I will not be missing any time for a broken hand! This is nothing, I have had worse injuries than this. I am ready to go and ready to play.”

So, no need to panic and an injury he's clearly able to manage, with Burn likely to return to Tuchel's XI for next week's World Cup qualifier in Latvia before he returns to Tyneside.
