Alan Shearer: I’m anxious about Newcastle's summer transfer window

Newcastle United are making moves in the summer transfer window, although a fair bit of it has been through the exit.

Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali followed a few out-of-contract stars out the doors at St James' Park, and it looks like Bruno Guimarães could follow along with Jacob Murphy, Joe Willock and Nick Pope.

There have been incomings, though, as Ewen Jaouen, Bazoumana Toure and Sean Steur have all come in, although a move for Johan Manzambi has now fallen through

With so many players leaving, Ross Wilson has plenty of incomings to sort out too, or Eddie Howe is going to be pulling fans out of the stands to get some boots on and play.

Alan Shearer is feeling a bit better about Newcastle's summer

Former Toon skipper Alan Shearer is getting a bit nervy looking at Newcastle's business so far, telling Betfair (via Newcastle World) that he likes what the club is doing, but is still anxious.

“Newcastle are targeting young, hungry up-and-coming players for £30million to £40million.

“I'm pleased that eventually Newcastle have started to move because it was getting a tad anxious after they sold Gordon and Sandro Tonali.

“I'm hoping that if they can get Manzambi, Steur and Toure in, then that's not the only three that they will bring in. Manzambi has had a really good World Cup.

“It was a shame he was injured against Colombia. But he looks like a really good talent. I hope his price is not going up with every good game he has.”

There's so much more we need

Newcastle now need to pivot after losing out on Manzambi. There are still so many deals that need to be done, but the club's confidence must be shaken after missing out on two top targets already in such a manner.

As we said earlier, Newcastle needs to add at least one, preferably two full-backs. Depending on what happens with Bruno Guimarães, we could probably do with another midfielder; similarly, if Jacob Murphy is sold, we need another winger as backup for Anthony Elanga.

In truth, with all the exits, that would probably still leave us short, unless part of this move to youth involves bringing in players from the Under-21s to play a bigger part.
