Wayne Bridge? Mevlut Erdinc? Jose Enrique?
There is a bit of news about linking us with a move for Wayne Bridge. Today it comes from The Star, but it first came to light yesterday.
At first I chuckled, then ignored it as Newcastle would never pay wages in the region of £85,000-a-week to anyone, let alone a 30-year-old would they?
But when I read that a deal to bring Bridge to Newcastle is alleged to be a loan deal, with Manchester City paying a portion of his wages, the alarm bell started to ring. I mean isn't that the kind of deal we'd go for?
The Star is alleging that Bridge would be signed as backup for Jose Enrique now that a move for Neil Taylor of Swansea seems to have died a fairly miserable death. It's a lot of money for a backup though isn't it? Would Wayne Bridge really settle for that role? I'm not so sure.
Inevitably he will be viewed as a replacement for Jose Enrique, who still hasn't give any indication as to where his future lies. Hopefully we'll get a bit more information on that next week as pre-season training starts tomorrow, and it's kind of hard for Jose to hide if he has to be back at work, but the silence coming from the Spaniard's camp is deafening in my view.
So where does that leave us? Well it is Sunday so it's probably just more paper bollocks to be honest. I can't see us signing Wayne Bridge, and in truth I probably wouldn't want us to. I mean his last contribution to the Premier League was playing in a defence which ended up relegated......
If we're looking at backup for Jose then we should be looking a someone like Neil Taylor in my opinion. Signing an experienced head like Bridge may have it's merits, but would it be wise to put a lot of our seemingly limited eggs into one basket for a player who is tagged as a backup? I'm not so sure.
In other news....
The News of the World has us back in for Mevlut Erdinc and claims that we are ready to bid £7.5 million with Jose Enrique once again becoming a target for Liverpool after a move for Gael Clichy broke down.
Food for thought.
