Odds slashed for out of work manager to replace Steve Bruce at Newcastle United
Odds on Eddie Howe to become the next Newcastle manager have been slashed by Betfair as the pressure on Steve Bruce continues to mount.
The former Bournemouth boss has been out of work since he got them relegated at the end of the 2019/20 season and topped a poll by The Chronicle in March when they asked Toon fans who they would bring in as manager.
Howe almost joined Celtic in the summer but pulled a last-minute U-turn, with Betfair now cutting his price from 6/1 to 2/1 that he moves to Tyneside and replaces an under-fire Bruce.
Our current boss has never been accepted by the Toon Army and critics are out more than ever after a poor start to the season; We are yet to win in five league games and have been dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Burnley.
I would be happy to see Howe brought in as gaffer and most clubs would see him as an open goal appointment due to his free agent status, with no compensation package required towards another club.
He would bring a positive style of play and has worked with Ryan Fraser and Callum Wilson in the past. The former has been a disappointment so far for us and Howe could perhaps get the Scotland international firing again.
However, logic and ambition are two words that are not synonymous with Mike Ashley’s Newcastle and I can’t see him sacking Bruce anytime soon.
I feel he will only pull the trigger when we are in a truly perilous position and will not want to pay his reported £4million compensation package while there is still plenty time for us to turn things around.
