Two 8/10s, a few 7s and one sloppy 5 - Newcastle player ratings from 2-1 win vs Fulham
Newcastle United got back to winning ways last night, as Lewis Miley's stoppage time header secured a 2-1 victory over Fulham and our place in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.
Here are our marks out of 10 and comments on each player involved in the game...
Starting 11
Aaron Ramsdale (6.5) - Didn't have much to do, but was better at commanding his box and showed some decent distribution. Not much he could've done about Lukic's goal.
Lewis Miley (8*) - A mature and disciplined defensive display against the dangerous Kevin, looked after the ball well and delivered right when we needed him to with that brilliant late header. My man of the match.
Malick Thiaw (7.5) - Imperious once again. Dominant in his duels (in the air and on the floor), read the game effortlessly and played several line breaking passes to get us on the front foot quickly.
Fabian Schar (6.5) - A silly booking early on rules him out of the semi-final first leg, but did a solid job defensively and pinged a lovely pass out to Murphy in the build up to our opener.
Tino Livramento (5) - Too many attacks broke down with Tino, who looked clumsy and hesitant on the ball whenever he tried to get forward. Was poor against Sunderland and looked levels below his best once again here.
Bruno Guimaraes (8) - Stood out as the most talented footballer on the pitch. Always wanted the ball, took responsibility and was always trying to knit attacks together with penetrating passes in behind. Looked like a man determined to respond to Sunday's horror show.
Jacob Ramsey (7) - Grew in confidence through the game. Carried the ball forward well and showed his willingness to work back defensively with a strong first half challenge to stop a Fulham break and win back possession. More needed, but better from him.
Joe Willock - (6) - A mixed bag. Looks better physically and covered plenty of ground, also winning the ball back well a few times. In possession, needs to offer a little bit more.
Jacob Murphy (6) - Delivered the dangerous cross that created Wissa's opener and didn't hesitate to put balls into the box. Off the ball, however, I thought he was weak, losing a few too many duels and reacting slowly in the build up to Fulham's opener.
Yoane Wissa (7.5) - His energy, movement in behind and fox-in-the-box ability was refreshing to see, with his early goal an underrated finish. A good run out for his match fitness and great to see him score on his first start.
Harvey Barnes (5.5) - Rarely got past Tete and his final ball wasn't quite there. Missed one big chance to get us in behind in the first half and struggled to get things going with Tino down that left. Wanted more.
Substitutes
Sandro Tonali (7.5) - Brought bundles of energy and running to the side, looking far more like his normal self after a strangely sluggish displays at Leverkusen and Sunderland. Drove us on, battled and delivered the corner for Miley's winner.
Nick Woltemade (5.5) - Didn't really get into the game and held onto the ball for too long, at times. Did set up Miley for the late chance that forced the winning corner, mind.
Alex Murphy (6.5) - Wasn't really tested, but was thrown in at the deep end with 20 minutes to go and didn't look out of place.
Anthony Gordon (N/A) - On for the last five minutes. Wanted him on sooner given Barnes' struggles, but it didn't matter in the end.
Anthony Elanga (N/A) - See above, although it was clear yet again that he's severely lacking confidence and struggling to burst past his man, despite his lightning pace.
